an ode to the box

enclosed are
my memories,
moments in time,
of curiosity,
of strength,
of doubt,
of honesty,
of delicacy and fragility,
clumsy mistakes,
gentle caresses,
growths,
dreams,
misalignments,
inspirations,
excitement,
sweetness,
bitterness,
of humble matters.

to hold
and to treasure,
enclosed in an embrace.

The oval boxes, when stacked, are reminiscent of Shaker boxes—historically made of bentwood and often painted with various earth pigments. The boxes were used to store dry food in pantries, as well as sewing and quilting supplies.

2.
Each box is hand-built using English porcelain with variations of glazes. First, using stencils, slabs are cut out to pieces and the walls are built. Once the structure dries out to leather-hard, the walls are trimmed and smoothed out evenly and the rim for the bottom half gets built while the top is hollowed out to ensure the two pieces fit together nicely.

3.
Madeleine plates, along with the boxes, are shaped using madeleine baking pans. They can be utilized as plates to store your jewelry, serve as incense holders, or hold other small precious objects. And, of course, each plate can hold a single madeleine perfectly fitted within its curve.

Okita boxes are made in collaboration with RUS, a sustainable knitwear brand based in Spain, and their FW 23 collection, Raw Edges. Drawing inspiration from the shapes and textures of the Okita sweater, incorporating colors from the collection, the three boxes embraces vulnerability and imperfections.

5.
Accompanying the boxes are sandwich cookies, a.k.a cookie sando, which directly takes the shapes of the boxes—fan, mame, cloud, and okita. The flavors are; sweet potato cream for the purple, cardamom and milk oolong for the beige, pandan and coconut for the green.

6.
The Monaka box shape is inspired by the japanese dessert monaka, made of thin wafers baked in molds, holding sweet red bean jam, ice cream, chestnut paste, etc.

7.
Shapes and glazes are inspired by nature—the way clouds move, a bag of beans from the farmers market, how flowers bloom all through the year.
